The Impact of Dirty Water

Icon of students with graduation caps on, with an X overlay, indicating that these children will not graduate or receive an education.

Thirsty children often need to skip school in order to collect water, missing out on their chance for an education. This limits future opportunities and holds children back.

Drinking dirty water increases sickness and suffering, causing children to miss more school and families to use their limited resources paying for treatment and medication.

Absences caused by sickness or taking care of family members stops people from working or creating businesses. This prevents communities thriving economically and keeps people trapped.

It doesn't have to be this way — change starts with water

Water is the foundation for health, dignity and a life full of opportunity. Yet 2.2 billion people around the world—a quarter of humanity—don’t have clean water to drink.

We have been equipping communities with clean water systems, toilets and hygiene education for 40+ years. We have reached 29 million people with clean water so far and we know the positive impact it has.

"Today is the best day of my life... Having water nearby allows me to do and work on other things."

Why WaterAid
We work with communities to install water and sanitation systems that are locally-owned and maintained. Our approach is led by the specific needs of the community. Once we have established a pilot project, we work with neighboring communities, districts and local officials to scale up our efforts. This allows us to reach more people at a faster rate. Trust is at the core of our work and this is how we integrate hygiene education and maintenance plans into our projects.
